Profits down for BMW, Fiat also down
BMW, the car in Monaco, gave 32.7% compared to 2007. Fiat does a -3% to Piazza Affari.
It confirms the difficult time for the automotive industry.
BMW has closed the second quarter with a sharp drop in profits and was forced to revise downwards its estimates on profits for the entire 2008. As reported by the German company, in the second quarter net profit fell by 32.7% to 507 million euros, compared with 753 million in the same period last year. The turnover decreased by 0.9% to 14.55 billion euros.
The decline is due, according to BMW, to a worsening of the overall framework for the automotive industry, due to the growth of commodity prices, the weakness of the dollar and the effects of international financial crisis. The group of Monaco of Bavaria issued a warning on profits for 2008. A story that has dragged down the title Bmw, came to lose over 10% in Frankfurt.
One problem, the stock market decline that as a result of the quarterly data arriving from Monaco, has even influenced the Fiat that with the BMW has made a recent agreement.
The title Fiat loses 3%, slipping back below the psychological threshold of 11 euros (July 22 last year), at 10.82 euros. The exchanges have already covered 8 million of shares, equal to 0.7% of ordinary share capital of the automotive group in Turin. Decided decrease in the insiders Fiat (-2.77%) and Fiat savings (-2.72%). "The alarm was Bmw off the market - said an operator - such as Fiat and other carmakers are feeling this."
But the crisis in the sector is felt especially in the U.S.. General Motors reported a loss of 15.5 billion dollars in the second quarter, that is $ 27.33 per share, much worse than expected.
Auto crisis is full title on the stock market collapses Fiat
In Italy, sales of cars rushing by record 19.5% less in June.
T Fiat title in wake with the results of sales does the same: in one year the value of the shares of Turin fell by almost 55%, from 22.43 euros on 2 July 2007 to 10 in July this year.
Watching the first half of 2008, the quotation at Piazza Affari Fiat is marked with a minus 43.43% against a market that the car, compared with the first six months of 2007, a decrease of 11, 4%.
This means that, apart from the international situation and the high-oil, Fiat shares continue to be auto-dependent, a problem that Sergio Marchionne knows well and for which, sooner or later have to find a solution. The ad del Lingotto, however, imputes "to oil prices (again over $ 143 a barrel, ndr), to those of raw materials in general and those who are liquidating to cover losses, the reasons for the debacle of registrations in country.
According to Marchionne, confirming the targets in 2008 and 2009, the only solution is "wait for it to reach the market." Meanwhile, in Turin, it was decided to adapt the list (plus the 1.5% average increase) throughout the range (Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Fiat Professional) just to cope with rising raw material. Touches also associated CNH (plus 5%) and Iveco (plus 2.5%).
In a worrying scenario (worse of now, however, by Spain: 30.8% less and less in June from 17.6% in January), the Centro Studi Promotor has revised downwards its estimates of year-end, assuming a closing 2.1 million units sold. It is also negative orders, the most immediate indicator of the health sector (less than 15% in June) and contracts for used cars (down 6.5% last month). Also on Centro Studi Promotor observes that the data on the confidence of dealers has fallen to the levels of 1993, "that is in full of the great crisis of the market." The Italian brands, but the general feeling of the situation, managed to gnaw shares: Fiat Group Automobiles has closed in June to 32.7% (plus 1.2%), despite the reduction in sales (down 16.5%), however lower to the total. Growing Lancia (4.74% penetration), pending the desire "Delta effect", while Alfa Romeo continues to suffer (2.8% share compared to 3.10% a year ago): the availability of Myth gradually bring out the best Biscione levels. But a clear signal to the case concerns the growing public attention to the gas-powered vehicles: the Panda gas, in this respect, represents 25% of sales of the model which, incidentally, was the most popular among the city -car. The shift towards alternative engines, albeit still limited, it is analyzing the tables dell'Unrae: continue to fall the demand for diesel cars, once the favorite (from 129,542 to 92,806 in June) and those with petrol (from 90,385 to 79,994 units), while the demand rises for vehicles classified under 'Other' (11,459 to 9,076). Also in the house Fiat (exploits in France: over 29% group and 48.5% in the Prince brand) the company has decided to resort to layoffs in Melfi (from July 28 to July 31), where comes the Grande Punto while the former Mirafiori Meccaniche it will also work on Saturday (25th August): 200 in recruitment and the gradual stabilization of 160 young people with a contract term. Will be produced in Poland, not in Turin, the new engine of small displacement of Fiat Powertrain. You Marchionne's answer to the rigidity of trade unions on the requests of the Lingotto.
